Pneumatic vs Cushion Tire Forklifts: What’s the Difference?
If you are thinking about renting or buying a forklift, but are somewhat of a novice when it comes to the different types, you’re in luck. A few weeks back we discussed 3-wheel vs 4-wheel forklifts, and today we are going to look at pneumatic vs cushion tire machines. It is important to recognize that there are many, many different types of forklifts out there today, all of which are designed with specific uses and purposes in mind. In order to ensure you are renting or buying the right machine for your needs, it is important that you have a good understanding of the various options on the market.
Before you do anything else, we encourage you to sit down and determine what environment and what type of lifting you need the forklift for. Once you have answered these questions; it will be much easier for you to determine which type of forklift is appropriate. Before we look at the differences between a pneumatic tire and cushion tire forklift, let’s go over a few important questions to help you determine which piece of equipment will be right for you:
- Will you be using the forklift indoors or outdoors, primarily?
- If using indoors, does your warehouse or building have narrow aisles that the forklift will be navigating?
- How important is turning radius to you?
- Are you working with a large, open space?
- If using primarily outdoors, what type of surface will the forklift be traveling on? Asphalt, gravel, concrete, grass, or so other surface?
- Are there any large, sharp, or potentially dangerous object on the grounds?
Answering these questions to the best of your ability will give you a better idea of which type of forklift is appropriate and will get the job done in an efficient and effective manner. Let’s now look at some of the main characteristics of pneumatic tire forklifts vs cushion tire.
Pneumatic Tire Forklift
This type of forklift is an excellent option if you will mainly be using it outdoors on rugged terrain. Pneumatic tires are designed to withstand a rough environment, helping you get the job done regardless of the terrain. These tires are made from aggressive tread rubber and are categorized as either solid resilient pneumatic or standard air pneumatic. There are slight differences between the two (one is 100% rubber, the other is layered rubber filled with air) so it may be a good idea to discuss which is right for your needs with your local Dallas forklift expert.
Cushion Tire Forklift
Cushion tire forklifts, on the other hand, are ideal for both indoor and outdoor smooth terrain. The tires on this type of forklift are designed to be used indoors, in most cases, specifically in warehouses and manufacturing facilities. If you are working in tight quarters with narrow aisles, a cushion tire forklift may be your best option, as they have an excellent turning radius and are lower to the ground.
